Andros Townsend is understood to be keen on returning to Newcastle United only six months after they sold him to Crystal Palace for £13m.
With Rafael Benítez similarly enthusiastic about a potential reunion with the sometime England winger on Tyneside and Sam Allardyce willing to lose Townsend, the stumbling block is Newcastle's desire for a loan deal with a view to a more permanent transfer in the summer.
Palace, though, want their money back now so Allardyce can reinvest in the transfer market as he attempts to keep the south London club in the Premier League. Strongly placed to win promotion from the Championship, Newcastle have ample cash reserves but Mike Ashley, their owner, has provided Benítez with a rather less generous budget this month than had originally been envisaged.
Palace are due to pay the next £3m instalment due to Newcastle this month but it is maglia Liverpool Poco Prezzo understood that could become a loan fee, with the Championship side paying £10m in the summer to make the deal permanent. That could provide Allardyce with funds for Hull's Robert Snodgrass, while they are also interested in signing Stewart Downing from Middlesbrough on loan, with Aitor Karanka having informed the former England winger that he is free to leave this month.
It is hoped a compromise will be reached in the next week or so which will end an unfortunate interlude in Townsend's career. Indeed, the 25-year-old – who signed for Newcastle from Tottenham Hotspur last January and left with a slightly heavy heart after building a strong rapport with Benítez – is believed to now regret swapping St James' Park for Selhurst Park in the summer. Although Allardyce had long admired his game, Townsend struggled badly under his predecessor, Alan Pardew, and has failed to impress under his latest manager.
Much now hinges on Ashley and whether he is minded to reverse his decision to refrain from investing heavily in new players until Newcastle are back in the top tier.
Meanwhile, Allardyce has refused to give up hope on adding Carl Jenkinson and Patrick van Aanholt to his relegation-threatened squad this month. «Until the chairman rings me up and says the Carl Jenkinson deal is dead, it is still ongoing for me and the same with Patrick van Aanholt,» Allardyce said. «Until we hear that Sunderland are not selling, we are interested. Whether they have got any further, the chairman will update me later on, today or tomorrow.»
Allardyce has added only one new face – Jeffrey Schlupp from champions Leicester – to his side, who are just one place above the drop zone.
The former Sunderland manager claimed he Bequeme Schalke 04 Trikot missed out on midfielder Jake Livermore, who completed his move from Hull to West Brom on Thursday. During his short spell at the Stadium of Light, Allardyce signed some players in his last January window which he believes kept the club in the top flight. «I wish I could be very confident and say I could find four players like I did at Sunderland who will all make such a big contribution to the team, and that they would save the club from relegation,» Allardyce added.
«I will try my hardest in this window to buy or loan players to improve the squad.
»We are not sure where we will end up. We have got one, but have missed about 20 where offers have gone in. We are in for a lot of players and at the moment we are not having too much success."

Kane secured England's first opening game victory at a major tournament since the 2006 World Cup but the Tottenham forward left it late, requiring a stoppage time header to seal a 2-1 win against Tunisia in Volgograd.
Having dominated proceedings following Kane's 11th-minute opener, England began to run out of ideas after Fenjani Sassi's 33rd-minute penalty had given the Tunisians an unexpected lifeline. But Kane ensured that England got their Russia 2018 campaign off to the perfect start by heading in at the far post in the 90th minute — a goal that earned a deserved win following a series of controversial incidents.
Another win against Panama in Nizhny-Novgorod on Sunday will confirm England's progression to the round of 16 but for long periods of the second half, it appeared as though Gareth Southgate's men were facing a frustrating start to the World Cup. A host of missed chances in the first half enabled Tunisia to stay in touch and keep hope of a way everton fotballdrakter back into the game, and they were gifted that when Colombian referee Wilmar Roldan awarded a soft penalty after Kyle Walker's flailing arm struck Fakhreddine Ben Youssef while a cross was floated into the box.
With Kane twice being denied a penalty after being fouled in the Tunisia area, England looked set to be denied by bad finishing and poor refereeing.
Ineffective performances by Raheem Sterling and Dele Alli also hampered England, but Kane delivered when it mattered and Southgate's team can now prepare for a place in the knockout rounds.
Monday night saw England's most inexperienced World Cup lineup, in terms of combined appearances, since 1962 and it showed as they almost fluffed their lines against Tunisia.
In the first half, England had enough chances to race into a four- or five-goal lead but some wasteful finishing, by Jesse Lingard in particular, allowed Tunisia to cancel out Kane's opening goal. Prior to Tunisia's equaliser, England were utterly dominant but still gave their opponents hope with defensive lapses and an inability to capitalise on their period of dominance.
At the highest level, it is crucial to take chances when they arise and England failed to do that until Kane rescued them at the death with his stoppage-time header. Despite the result, their sloppiness before will concern Southgate. England allowed carelessness to creep in at the back and offered a limited Tunisia team the chance to get back into a game they should have been out of within the opening half-hour.
Teams that have experience of playing at the highest level, like at World Cups, know how to manage a game and stem the tide when they need to. But at this stage, England simply do not have the players capable of taking a grip of the game and calming their teammates when they are losing momentum.
Kane came to the rescue in the end, but England need to be better than this if they have to have a chance of reaching maglie calcio bambino the latter stages.
This was not a great night for the match officials or VAR. Referee Roldan awarded Tunisia a first-half penalty without consulting VAR, after Walker's arm caught the face of F. Ben Youssef. Although it appeared to be a soft decision, Walker was careless to have defended with his back to his opponent; the referee deserves the benefit of the doubt on that one.
Where he and VAR fell short, though, was when Kane was twice wrestled to the ground in the penalty area with no foul awarded for the England captain. In the first half, a John Stones shove on a Tunisia defender at a corner probably negated the rugby tackle on Kane seconds later. But after the break, Kane was once again grappled and shoved to the ground with neither the referee nor VAR taking action. Harry Maguire was also on the receiving end of some heavy-handed Tunisian defending in the first half as another incident that went unpunished.

Atletico Madrid's plans to have goalkeeper Jan Oblak return to action as quickly as possible are underway, with the club aiming to follow an example set out by Petr Cech.
This week, the Slovenian ace suffered a shoulder injury which is set to rule him out for three to four months, based on the most optimistic prognosis.
The initial hope was that he would return in time to take part in the second leg of Atletico Madrid's Champions League tie against Bayer Leverkusen fussball trikot in early March.
Atletico Madrid's optimism comes from former Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech, who sustained a similar injury to Oblak in 2014. Coincidentally, that came in a Champions League tie against the Rojiblancos in April at the Estadio Vicente Calderon.
After suffering the exact same injury, on the same shoulder too, it took the Czech Republic international just 10 weeks to return to action, making an early comeback.
On July 23, three months since the collision with Raul Garcia, he made his first appearance since the injury when he featured against Wolfsberger in a friendly but his return to activity had in fact occurred two weeks earlier at the beginning of pre-season.
Using Cech as inspiration, Oblak has already started on the path to a similar recovery himself, starting by putting himself in the same hands of the man who helped the current Arsenal man.
Oblak travelled to London's King Edward VII Hospital to be operated on by the renowned Dr Andrew Wallace, the same PSG Fotballdrakt man who performed surgery on Cech.
«Cech managed to return in just nine weeks,» Oblak's agent Miha Mlakar told Goal. «The arthroscopy has been 100 percent successful and everything has gone well.
»Now, he will have to rest for three or four weeks and start rehabilitation. In two months, he will be back even better and stronger."
The worst case scenario return date of five to six months for Oblak looks set to be beaten with ease, following the example set by Cech.
